dc.description.abstractGreenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector are a cause of concern in the world. The zero-growth objective in passenger car transport in nine urban areas in Norway was suggested as one way of reducing the emissions nationally in the Norwegian National Transport Plan. Cycle superhighways are proposed as being important in making cycling a more attractive and competitive mode for passenger car users. The knowledge of the effects seems to be insufficient. A section of a cycle superhighway has been planned in the city of Trondheim in Norway. This study was conducted to evaluate its expected effects on people’s intended behaviour connected to the cycle superhighway and whether topography had an impact on its use. An online questionnaire was distributed to a sample of approximately 2800 households in close proximity to a planned cycle superhighway section. The section has a difference in altitude of approximately 100 m from end-to-end. 148 people responded to the questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and Pearson’s chisquared test were performed using Excel and SPSS. The analyses indicated that people would intend to bicycle more frequently on the section after the cycle superhighway is built, both during the summer and winter. Generally, people stated that their perception of the gradient as a barrier on the section would be lowered if the cycle superhighway is built. People also stated that they would have cycled more frequently if the section was flat, but there was more or less no difference in the stated intentions for a flat road in its current state or with a cycle superhighway having been built. These results can be useful for planners and decision makers by adding further knowledge about the effects of cycle superhighways. However, further research is needed to obtain more conclusive information about whether and in what way cycle superhighways might change the way we travel.nb_NO
